This new site will document the new journey through business brokerage and beyond.

In addition, I
have moved from the Blogger platform which has served me faithfully
through the years, and onto WordPress. The new site has dedicated
plugins that simplify the process of posting new listings onto the new
real estate website.
Maray na Aga, Bikol! It's such a great morning in Legazpi City, especially after a good night's sleep on a proper bed. But as with all great mornings, there are great things to do. So off we go to another Mozilla event, just one floor down from the hotel.

As usual, our faithful Bikolano Community Manager met and greeted the participants from Bicol University and the tech community in Legazpi City at the La Mia Tazza Coffee of Embarcadero de Legazpi that overlooks the sea.

After the introductions, we got right into Engagement mode, introducting Mozilla products and projects, left and right, along with the generous demonstrations online and actual. We encouraged them to be web makers as well as to organize their own Mozilla events. Such a great discussion, so little time.

After the MozCoffee, some of the participants helped us find our way around Legazpi City to book our bus tickets back Manila. Such hospitable people. I'm looking forward to the next Bicol event!Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0Legazpi City, Philippines13.1390621 123.743799513.0153591 123.585871 13.262765100000001 123.90172799999999tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-57545181574213365082012-06-30T23:30:00.000+08:002012-07-05T16:31:21.295+08:00What a Great Open Web Day at Naga!

Another awesome day was completed today!

We have just finished the first day of the Bicol MozTour--two grueling days of events across two different major cities in two different provices in the picturesque region of Bicol. We travelled to the Heart of Bicol in the dead of the night, some 389 km south of Quezon City.

The first day was held at the Fr. James O'Brien Library of the Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City, Camarines Sur (also known as CamSur). More than fifty attendees flocked to the computer research center of the library to participate in the Open Web Day, jointly organized by the Philippine communities of Mozilla and Wikimedia. As ever, Mozilla Philippines was lead by its ever-vibrant Community Manager Jun Barrun, and the Wikimedia team was lead by Jojit Ballesteros.

Most of the attendees were Library and Information Science students as well as Librarians from the local librarians organization.

The usual format for Open Web Day was followed, with Wikimedia PHL introducing how Wikipedia works, and how to contribute as well as an online workshop where the participants submitted new content to Wikipedia.

After the Wikipedia workshop, Mozilla PHL had its turn to tell the story of Mozilla, our advocacies and our products and projects. Unusual for Jun, he finished his long keynote in half the time he usually takes. Nice!

Next up, Jean Austin Rodriguez introduced the Boot to Gecko project (aka Firefox Mobile OS) along with the demo phone.

Lastly, I was asked to speak on localization. After my talk, I asked the participants to contribute 220 more strings to complete the strings translation. And they finished the translation in less time than I did to finish my talk! Great work, Naga City! :) Now it's up to the reviewers and approvers of the Tagalog translation to finish the job. :)

We capped off the day by traveling another 119 km to Legazpi City for the second leg of the Bicol MozTour.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0Naga City, Philippines13.6390999 123.280549113.5773764 123.2015851 13.700823399999999 123.3595131tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-80499627978402399622012-06-27T00:00:00.000+08:002012-06-27T15:18:03.136+08:00Massive Firefox for Android Now Available!

I've worked with these guys since 2003, and these are hard-core open source advocates, as well as Firefox users. These guys are users of GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X, and normally also use these technologies for their application deployments.

Among the topics that we discussed were the Firefox for Enterprise users, as well as auto-update functionality. Newer versions of Firefox use silent updates that were normally blocked by corporate firewall. Also among the topics were marketing opportunities.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-11091916977945118792012-05-07T23:01:00.000+08:002012-05-07T23:05:38.993+08:00Airport tussle with Public FiguresColumnist Ramon Tulfo figured in a fight against a gang led by showbiz couple Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto at the NAIA Terminal 3 yesterday. Several news reports point to the said altercation can be found online with the social networks were spewing vitrioil against both camps.

I'll try not to touch on the irrelevant facts of the case, as you can learn about them on the news reports, but I'd like to express my vehement opinion against the couple. I believe that Tulfo was merely doing his job as a journalist in recording Claudine's tirade against the Cebu Pacific. Whether Tulfo was on his vacation or not, a journalists job begins when something interesting is happenning. Something interesting turned out to be newsworthy indeed!

I don't believe Santiagos were right on ganging up on the man. Firstly, their defense about privacy doesn't hold any water. They are public figures, they are in a public place, and there were other people involved, in this case, employees of the public transport company. In other words, they were pretty much fair game at that time. Now, if they had really wanted privacy, they should have chartered a private plane.

Secondly, the man is old and alone. There were six or so young people in Raymart's group. You can almost see the social injustice of it all. When the tussle started, the guards restrained the old man, and nobody restrained the young people. (Damned useless guards. On the video, you can see one guard who was just standing.)

The news as of this writing is that both camps are filing charges against each other. But all these could have been avoided if we learned that journalists are essential to us as a society. Please, don't shoot the messenger, especially the journalists. Sila po ang nagrereport ng mga makabuluhan na balita. Otherwise, we'll all be reading blind items. Kahit nga mga showbiz reporters, hindi ginagalang ng mga nasa showbiz. Kaya rin siguro, ganun na lang ang trato ng mag-asawa kay Mon Tulfo. I'd like to not compare this incident with the Maguindanao Massacre, but if you analyze the root of it all, isa lang kasi makikita mo: that some parties don't want the truth to come out. There is a sub-culture among the rich and famous to cover up the truth, or to twist it if it does not suit their agenda. This is a culture that we, ordinary Filipinos, should not tolerate. The press is not to be oppressed. Stop the violence against journalists and bloggers NOW.

Nota Bene: Some people have noted that Mon Tulfo is an asshole. A word of advice to the naive: it's not illegal to be an asshole, both on or off the Internet, but it's illegal to throw punches and false statements.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-60066597936520040262012-04-02T22:29:00.001+08:002012-04-02T23:58:47.784+08:00TRO defy, Nuns justify

I've been following the case of the 5 students of STC Cebu whose pictures of them in bikini were the subject of much controversy in the media. The case involves quite a backward take on morality and child rearing. Lots of tweets are on it, lots of blog posts, lots of drama, religious jihad, and stuff like that on the comments and the sidelines.

At first, it was STC who held the moral authority as the children indeed violated the rules found in their Handbook.

However, things took a turn-around when they took a page from P-Noy's Secretary of Justice, Laila de Lima, who defied a Supreme Court TRO allowing GMA and the ex-FG from leaving the country. In fact, they used the same term-- "deficient".

Suddenly, the issue became larger than the mere five students involved. The issue now is, are the TRO's issued by the RTC, SC, or any Philippine court, merely a guideline or an order that must be followed.

In punishing the students, the nuns of STC defied law of the humans in the Philippines. After reading much in the debate, I now believe the students do, in fact, deserve punishment. And true enough, the nuns have succeeded in doing so.

On the other hand, I also believe the nuns also deserve punishment for defying the TRO. A court TRO is not a mere piece of paper. It is the judgement of an official of the land, a representative of the Filipino's justice. Irrespective of the deficiencies of the TRO, they are not merely obliged, but obligated to follow it. While these nuns do have dedicated their lives to following their version of God's law, they must first follow the law of man, for it is among men that they live their lives in service to God.

Defying the TRO is a classic move of the nuns "making a wrong to 'right' another wrong." It is then left to the RTC to render everything right. In a stroke of ultimate justice, I pray that the RTC judge hold these nuns in contempt of court (and mete out the appropriate punishment), while accepting the punishment that they gave their wards as well. In doing so, the RTC will reclaim its authority that has been in much tatters since the day the SC held itself above it. Should the nuns accept the punishment of the RTC, it will render them invincible against future children and parents who hope the get around the rules in the Handbook--that they are willing to be crucified so that their wards can claim eternal life.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-39272802732565326492012-03-29T13:18:00.002+08:002012-03-29T13:21:08.237+08:00Crazy copyright infringement claimAds serve to distribute a message from businesses about their products and services that they are selling to potential customers, like you and I. So, knowing this in mind, it's often in the best interest of the ad to be seen by a lot of people, especially people like you and I who have enough spare cash to buy what they are selling.

Some years back, I wrote about a piece about a new (then) Microsoft ad to counter the "I'm a Mac" ads. As with any other Internet video, it had a YouTube video which you can embed and so on and so forth.

Therefore, it was with great surprise that I discovered my post no longer had the video on, but the embedded video says it was reported for infringement by Microsoft. Infringement?? For distributing ads?? Shocking! They should be paying the guy, instead of banning him.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-35984464295439710532012-03-27T13:08:00.002+08:002012-03-29T13:20:43.801+08:00On the Enhanced K+12 Basic Education

A lot of Filipinos still have no strong opinions regarding the K+12 program. As a parent whose child (and future children) will be definitely affected by this program, I totally support this measure. A lot of students tend to look towards life after college as the beginning of their working (and productive) lives. However, this is not so.

In fact, I have a Japanese acquaintance who only finished high school, but works in the Japanese civil service as an international coordinator. His job does not require the specialization that a college degree provides. In fact, he's probably better off as a generalist who can weave together people from different specializations to work together in order to achieve a common goal. For a more mundane example, a Filipino at age 18, should be able to work as a cashier, as a writer, as factory worker, as a supervisor, and simply be as productive as those who do not have a college degree. Mind you, education helps, but it's not required for success (unless that's your metric).

Most parents want their children to finish college. However, this is a symbolic achievement. A big one, perhaps, but a symbol nevertheless. A college education does not give you the chance to become productive and successful. DLSU Manila will be hosting the 2nd Open Web Day. This event is a joint project of the Mozilla and Wikipedia communities in the Philippines to improve content and localization from Filipino content.
Mozilla Philippines previously featured the 1st Open Web Day, held at Robinson's Place, Manila. This event will be similar, but will be held in the Bro. Andrew Gonzalez Hall of the De La Salle University, also in Manila.

A laptop or tablet computer is a minimum requirement for joining this event, as unlike the first one, this is not going to be held in a Netopia store.

Should you be interested in joining, sign up at EventBrite. Don't forget to bring your tickets and ID's as security is quite strict at the DLSU.

See you there! =)

Update: 2nd Open Web Day successfully done. More details on the Mozilla Philippines blog.
Welcome back everyone!

I've decided to relaunch my old blog (neutitan.blogspot.com) as Marilag.org. The full name is "Marilag Ang Malaya" (Proud are the Free).

Aside from the usual technology posts, I'm sprinking it with a lot more socio-politico-culturally relevant posts.

Stay tuned everyone!Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-39460766075624714542010-01-29T11:39:00.005+08:002010-01-29T14:07:55.642+08:00Firefox Friday Feature of the Week: Personas

Today marks the very first Firefox Friday. It is the brainchild of Myra Jill. Every Friday, the members of the Mozilla Philippines Community will write a blog post and a tweet, with the tags #FirefoxFriday and #MozillaPH. As my personal twist on Firefox Friday, I will write about a Firefox feature that I like. The very first feature that I have chosen to highlight to day is Personas.

Personas is a light theming system for Firefox. It has drastically lowered the barrier of entry to make Firefox themes. There are now more than 35,000 themes available. As a user, I find that personas theme loads quickly and responsive. I could also choose a random theme from a certain category, and each of my Firefox windows will have a different theme.
You get Personas automatically when you download the Firefox 3.6, the latest release. If you like Personas so much, you can also get Personas Plus, an add-on that super-charges your Personas experience.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2943622034479344570.post-41405996525860718522010-01-24T19:23:00.000+08:002010-01-24T19:23:12.573+08:00Campus Reps assignments for 1QHere are the assigned tasks for Mozilla Campus Reps.
A lot of items were discussed, but I will focus on the Mozilla Campus Representatives activities for the first quarter of this year. Most of these are simply to push Mozilla Firefox into schools, and establish Campus Reps in these campuses.

IT Week, AMA Computer University, Quezon City
The Campus Rep here is John Arce. The school term started late, and so the IT week has been moved as well to mid-February, hopefully not on Valentine's Day.

<strike>IT Week, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Manila
There are no local campus reps, but they are currently represented by the campus reps from their sister school from Calamba. No dates have been set yet.</strike> Notice was given too late. It will be held tomorrow, Jan 28.

IT Week, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Calamba
Local campus reps are Eusebio Barrun and Joell Lapitan. Tentative date is sometime in March.

If you want Mozilla Campus Reps to visit you, please get in touch with us through the comments.

The Mozilla Campus Reps Philippines participated in the IT Week of Angelicum College of Quezon City on Monday, December 14. This event is the first campus event conducted by the Campus Reps, and represents the first of the baby steps of the Campus Reps towards cross-campus event organization.

I accompanied Jun Barrun (shown in picture giving the Mozilla talk) from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran. We met at the Cubao MRT, where we rode a taxi to Angelicum College where we were met by Josie Santos, the adviser of the Computer Society that organized the IT Week. They were really supportive and helpful.

After the opening ceremonies of the IT Week, Jun spoke on the virtues of Mozilla Firefox and the Open Web Standards.

We were initially surprised at the size of the event, since was also a Family Day for the Angelicum College. Our Firefox booth consisted of two tables, two chairs and the Firefox tarpaulin from the "Fire Years of Firefox in Manila" event. The booth was positioned in front of the gym along with other booths, where we could receive a lot of foot traffic and eyeballs because of the ongoing events held at the gym. One of the most curious comments that we received was from a elementary school-aged girl who lingered about the booth, and told me, "Meron kami niyan sa bahay. Sabi kasi ni mama, mas maganda gamitin ang Firefox." "We have Firefox at home, because Mom said that it is better to use." She is one lucky girl who has a capable mom who can teach her how to use a secure web browser. I'll take a guess that her mom probably works in the IT industry.

We talked with the IT students on how Firefox helps with keeping the Internet free from non-open standards, as well as a possible "Firefox Installation Day" for their computer labs, which are currently using only IE.

We also received inquiries on how Mozilla is organized and operates, and how the Mozilla Philippines Community and the Campus Reps are able to participate in campus events.

We did run out of few Mozilla goodies that we had, and we even had to give away the ones that we were already using. For future events, we created a specific checklist to follow, in order to have a smooth operation of both the booth and the talk.

We are thankful for Josie Santos, and the Computer Society for having us in their event. We hope to attend future events in Angelicum College. We are also thankful for Regnard Raquedan for his support for the Campus Reps. Special mention also goes out to Campus Reps Myra Jill Siason and Joell Lapitan.
It was a great place to meet up with fellows from the Mozilla Philippines Community, as well as the Campus Reps from UP Diliman and Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba.

I was there to introduce what the Campus Rep program, and to entice people to join up.

Globe was also there introducing some of their new products, minglr and web2mobile. I was impressed by the web2mobile service. Web2mobile allows you to select snippets of text as well as images from your Firefox browser, and send them as an SMS or MMS. Standard rates apply, ₱ 1 per SMS and ₱ 5 per MMS. Unlitext does not apply. =P

Minglr was also there. It's a social aggregation service. I think it would work great when used with a smartphone, so you can post your updates just once and it appears on all of your social networks.

For those who missed the event, here are some pics taken by Aja Lapus and Joell Lapitan.
When we first started the class DPI project, the first thing that came into my mind was how easy it would be. I mean, how difficult would it be to open packets, inspect their contents, and classify them accordingly. You could say it would be the equivalent of your friendly postman opening your mail, and classifying whether it contained something important, a postcard, some cash, or perhaps spam and even anthrax. And we're not looking for passwords, credit card information or information for the spooks. No, we are more benevolent than that.

Our purpose would be to classify applications running on the network properly. If we're going to monitor our networks, we must have a complete picture of the applications that our users are running on them. While most of these applications are "visible" and can easily be blocked. However, many applications running on the Internet have acquired the ability to bypass firewalls and proxies. Because of many corporate, academic, technical and what-not policies that have governed networks for the past few years, have pushed applications to use proxies or encrypt their communications in order to bypass the usual roadblocks that network administrators have put in place over our networks today.

The wisdom of such blocks have been in serious question, both on the technical and user levels. However, the reality is that these blocks are here to stay, and the target applications of such blocks have adapted to the current Internet landscape. A great example of such a versatile program would be Skype.

The purpose of our class project was to detect peer-to-peer traffic that have managed to pass through the roadblocks that the university network administrators have put in place.

While we did manage to get a sample of the network traces, we have yet to detect any peer-to-peer activity in the university network. So far, the university network administrators have appeared to succeed in their "quest" to block all kinds of peer-to-peer traffic.

We also used some machine learning techniques on the traces, however, I think that we have largely failed in that because we don't have any training data to use... because there have been no peer-to-peer traffic detected. We need to get data which we positively know has peer-to-peer traffic. If we can't detect it, then we should run some applications and actively look for holes in the university network. Once we "detect" our own traces, put them into the machine learning tool and use it as training data to detect the peer-to-peer traffic that do not belong to us.

The other technique that the class investigated, which is actually reading the packet contents, is either a hit-or-miss thing. We can argue that reading the first few bytes of the data can give us the name of the actual application, however, once this traffic is encrypted, all bets are off. I believe this technique will only be useful in the near-to-medium term, and will work only on simple applications that have not acquired the variety of users who need to use special methods to bypass proxies and firewalls.

We are not yet there, but we have learned the "what not to do in DPI". This may sound like an Edisonian way of thinking, but I believe that as we continue to refine our techniques and code, we will be able to achieve a way to detect peer-to-peer traffic without reading the payload.Renren Gabashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06426792432920802900noreply@blogger.com0
